Renovations have commenced at Maria Parham Health’s Emergency Department (ED) with a ceremonial event held on March 17, 2025. The event featured hospital leadership and local officials, including CEO Bert Beard, Sheriff Curtis Brame, Granville-Vance Public Health Director Lisa Harrison, and DA Mike Waters. The attendees participated in a symbolic wall-breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the multi-million-dollar renovation project aimed at enhancing patient care and safety.
Bert Beard commented on the significance of the project during the hospital’s 100th anniversary, stating: “As we look to the next hundred years, it feels especially fitting that we’re taking such a significant step forward with this project.”
The renovation initiative results from six years of collaboration with community stakeholders, addressing the need for secure spaces for patients experiencing mental health crises. The project will provide designated areas for these patients to ensure their safety and security.
The new space will include dedicated beds for mental health crises patients, reducing pressure on law enforcement and ensuring safety within the hospital. Renovations will cover approximately half of the existing ED space. During construction, EMS access will be maintained while some ED areas will close temporarily. Temporary facilities are set up to continue regular services.
The ceremony also recognized several staff members for their contributions. Dr. Darius Divina honored James Boyd as Employee of the Year for his teamwork and positive attitude.
“This is a great day for Maria Parham Health, and a great day for our community,” said Beard. He emphasized that this development ensures continued high-level care provision.
The ongoing renovation highlights Maria Parham Health’s dedication to improving patient care and meeting community needs through enhanced emergency services.
