North Carolina Central University said in mid-June it was awarded $1 million to research COVID-19.

As one of the state’s historically black colleges, NCCU said the funding will create a new research center called the Advanced Center for COVID-19 Disparities, INDYWeek reported on June 13. The grant will cover 25 campus researchers who will study the impact of the coronavirus on underserved communities.

As witnessed across the country and in Durham County, the coronavirus has affected communities of color both economically and from a health perspective, INDYWeek reported.

North Carolina has seen 38% of the state's deaths in the African American community while only 21% of the population has been affected, INDYWeek reported.

NCCU’s new center, aside from research and testing, will “conduct outreach with local community groups and organizations to provide culturally sensitive and effective health messaging,” INDYWeek reported.
