HENDERSON POLICE DEPARTMENT: Rental Scam Alert

Scam

Henderson Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 21.

Scammers are often advertising home and apartment rentals that do not exist or are not available for rent.  This is designed to trick you in handing over money.

These scams are commonly conducted over the Internet through sites such as Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

You should never pay an upfront fee to see a property. This includes wiring funds or using gift cards to send cash. Consumers should also use caution in sending funds via Cash App.

Confirm the identity of the landlord through known sources such as a sign in the yard or posted on the door. Reputable rental agencies will have an establish means to be contacted.

Report all suspected scams by filing a complaint with the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If you are victim of a scam, please file a report with your local law enforcement agency.
