The North Carolina General Assembly has taken up a number of bills including one that would appropriate $2.5 million to expand broadband infrastructure across the Tar Heel state.
Lawmakers introduced the Satellite Broadband Grants in late May.
The bill appropriation would go toward the North Carolina Department of Information Technology’s Broadband Infrastructure Office where funds would be made available statewide to rural customers, the Institute for Emerging Issue reported.
One established entity that consumers can consider is the Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) program, which was created two years ago, the Institute for Emerging Issues reported. However, residents and small businesses in rural areas are not allowed to apply for both the Satellite Broadband Grants or those affiliated with the GREAT program. The GREAT program funds Tier One counties that are considered economically distressed.
