Renovations have begun at Maria Parham Health's Emergency Department, marked by a wall-breaking ceremony attended by hospital leaders and local officials. CEO Bert Beard, Sheriff Curtis Brame, Granville-Vance Public Health Director Lisa Harrison, DA Mike Waters, and other community partners took part in the event to commence a multi-million-dollar project aimed at enhancing patient care and safety.

Bert Beard commented on the significance of the project during the hospital's 100th anniversary: "As we look to the next hundred years, it feels especially fitting that we're taking such a significant step forward with this project."

The renovation initiative resulted from collaboration with community stakeholders over six years. Key figures like Granville-Vance Public Health, District Attorney Mike Waters, Henderson Police Chief Marcus Barrow, and Sheriff Curtis Brame identified the need for secure spaces for patients experiencing mental health crises. The renovations will include designated areas for these patients to ensure their safety and reduce risks.

Law enforcement often remains at the hospital due to limited protections for mental health patients under current systems. The new facility aims to provide dedicated beds for such patients, easing pressure on law enforcement resources.

To maintain patient care during construction, EMS access will continue through the back entrance while the front half of the ED is closed for four months. Temporary facilities are set up to sustain emergency services.

Several staff members were honored at the ceremony. Dr. Darius Divina recognized Crystal Hobgood as Clinical Director of the Year for her dedication to patient care; Tracey Moseley was named Ancillary Director of the Year for her leadership; and James Boyd received Employee of the Year for his teamwork spirit.

"This is a great day for Maria Parham Health," said Beard. "Together, we're ensuring that our hospital continues to evolve and provide the highest level of care."

The ongoing renovations reflect Maria Parham Health’s commitment to improving its capacity to meet community needs as construction progresses in coming months.
